Cookies and localStorage are different
Cookies are small values that a browser can send with requests to a website. localStorage is browser storage that page scripts can read on the same origin; its values are not automatically attached to every request. Rules governing device storage can apply to both technologies.
The supplied page scripts do not set cookies. They can save a single preference in localStorage only when you request it using the controls below. Reading articles, opening the navigation and expanding questions do not require that preference to be saved.
